From a Vaughan Welding Shop to 5,000+ GTA Stairs
Michael Bennett grew up watching his uncle run a small welding shop in Vaughan. By 15 he was cutting stair stringers on weekends, and by the time he finished school he knew he wanted to build stairs for a living, not just install them.
He formalized the trade at George Brown College's Cabinet and Furniture Making program, then spent 5 years welding architectural steel for a Cambridge structural fabricator. That mix of fine woodworking and structural steel is still the backbone of the shop: we build stairs like furniture and railings like structure.
In 2003 Michael opened Staircase Railings Toronto out of a rented Woodbridge unit, building oak stairs and iron railings for Vaughan and Etobicoke families. The work spread by word of mouth, then by builder referrals. Twenty-two years later, the shop is a 6,000 sq ft Etobicoke facility with in-house TIG and MIG welding, glass fabrication and finish carpentry.
The founding idea hasn't changed. Cut, weld and mill in the shop, not in your house. Draw every job to code before anything is cut. Publish the price so you can check it.

Every metal stringer, baluster, post and scroll is welded on a jig in the shop, ground clean and finished before it ships.

Laser templating on your stair, hardware drilled in house and CSA A500 tempered or laminated glass cut to size by our Canadian supplier.

Wood milling and finish carpentry
Rough-sawn oak, maple, walnut, cherry and white oak milled into stringers, treads, nosings and handrails, joined with dovetails.

Matte black, antique bronze and custom RAL colours baked on in the shop for finishes that outlast paint.

We buy from 4 Canadian suppliers: CSA A500 architectural glass, aluminum extrusions, wrought iron stock and dimensional hardwood. Marine-grade 316 stainless goes on every waterfront job. Buying in Canada keeps lead times short and lets us stand behind the materials.
The shop has been featured in Ontario Home + Design Magazine (2024) and toured by Canadian Contractor Magazine (2023), and we attend the Interior Design Show Toronto (IDS) every year to keep up with what designers are specifying.
