Railings run $75-$350 CAD per linear foot by material, custom wood staircases $8,500-$45,000, refinishing $65-$140 per tread and commercial stairs $18,000-$185,000. Every quote is itemised. Aluminum is our lowest band at $75-$155 per lin ft, interior wrought iron sits at $95-$185, spigot or framed glass at $150-$225 and frameless glass on standoffs at $225-$350. On the staircase side, a straight 13-15 tread run in oak starts at $8,500 and a grand curved foyer stair can reach $45,000 depending on radius, species and the balustrade you pair with it. Where your project lands inside a band comes down to stair rakes, corners, access (a third-floor condo with an elevator booking costs more to install than a bungalow porch) and any code upgrades the old stair needs. Your written quote breaks out design fee, CAD drawings, materials, fabrication and install on separate lines so you can compare it against other contractors line by line. ### Do you handle Ontario Building Code requirements and permits? Yes. We design and fabricate to OBC Section 9.8 (residential) and Section 3.4 (commercial): 900-965mm handrail height, 100mm max baluster spacing and a 42-inch guard on drops over 600mm, and we supply permit-ready CAD drawings. We never promise permit approval, because approval belongs to your municipality, whether that is Toronto Building, the Mississauga Building Division or City of Vaughan Building Standards. What we can promise is a drawing set that shows rise, run, headroom, guard height, baluster spacing and fastening details clearly enough that an examiner is not left guessing. That is a big reason our first-visit inspection pass rate sits at 99%. If your job needs a permit (most full stair replacements and many exterior guards do), the owner or GC files it and we provide the drawings and answer examiner questions. ### How long does a custom staircase or railing take? Most projects take 3-6 weeks from approved CAD drawings to shop completion, then 1-4 days on site. Curved stairs and forged iron sit at the long end. The calendar usually looks like this: an in-home consultation within the week, CAD drawings back to you in about a week after measuring, then shop time once you sign off on every reveal. Glass needs 2-4 weeks from laser templating to delivery because the panels are tempered to size after cutting. Aluminum is quicker, often 2-3 weeks. Because we pre-assemble stringers and dry-fit railing spans on shop jigs in Etobicoke, the part of the job that happens inside your house is short. A straight wood stair with an iron rail is often installed in two days. ### What glass thickness do you use for stair railings? CSA A500 tempered or laminated safety glass in 12mm or 15mm; frameless runs without a top rail get 15mm. We pick thickness from the span, the mounting system and the load the guard has to carry under OBC 9.8. Spigot and base shoe systems on a landing often work in 12mm, while a cantilevered frameless run on a feature stair gets 15mm, sometimes laminated with an SGP or PVB interlayer so the panel stays in place if it ever breaks. Hardware on exterior and waterfront jobs is marine-grade 316 stainless. ### Why does in-shop fabrication matter? In our opinion welding and milling belong in a shop, not on your hardwood. Our 6,000 sq ft Etobicoke facility does the cutting, TIG/MIG welding and finishing, so site work is clean assembly. It also matters for quality. A weld made on a bench with the part clamped square is a better weld than one made kneeling on a landing, and a powder coat oven-cured in the shop outlasts a spray can touch-up done in your driveway. Treads milled from rough-sawn stock and dry-fit on a jig arrive ready to go in, which is why our install days are counted in days, not weeks. You're welcome to book a shop visit and see a stair on the jig before it ships. ### Can you match the stain to my new hardwood floors? Yes. We test stain on an offcut of your actual flooring with low-VOC water-based finishes until it matches. We mill treads, nosings and handrails from the same species as your floor when possible (red oak, white oak, maple, walnut or cherry), then make sample boards and check them in your light, not ours. ### Are you insured and do you offer a warranty? Yes. We are WSIB registered with $2M commercial general liability and $500K property damage coverage, and every job carries a written workmanship warranty. Certificates are available on request for builders, property managers and condo boards. ### Which areas do you serve? All of Toronto plus Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, Burlington, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Ajax, Whitby and Pickering, with free in-home consultations across the GTA. ### Is a prefab stair or railing kit cheaper than custom? Sometimes on paper, rarely by the time it is installed. Kits need field trimming, shimming and extra posts to get past an inspector, and big-box pickets are often hollow. Our published bands start at $75 per lin ft for aluminum and $8,500 for a straight custom stair, built to your opening with nothing to trim on site. ### What happens at the free in-home consultation? Victorian and Edwardian houses in Riverdale, Cabbagetown and The Beaches often have narrow, steep stairs and 120-150mm baluster gaps.
